🎥Yeeting all our fixed lines and committing to summit the 1000m First Ascent of Journey to the Center of the Earth (5.10+, C2) on the coast of British Columbia with @onetrickpuppie back in 2019. We placed no bolts and left no gear on the wall. (Obviously went back for the haulbag)

I really don't have much to say about this climb, other than it was fun! 🙂
.
I've had some people reach out about the "speed climbing tactics" I used to get such a fast time. The route often gets climbed over two days and most commonly in one big day.
.
My speed-climbing secret is this: SOLID FUNDAMENTALS 🪨 (and decent cardio 😅).
.
It's tragically unsexy. I wish I could sell you THIS ONE TRICK TO ADD 2-4 INCHES TO YOUR *ahem* reach, but the things you buy and the words you read do very little for your speed/skill. The time you spend on the craft is paramount. And thank god for that.
.
There is a bit of a shortcut though. Have an experienced person teach you! 😇 They'll make sure you're not wasting your precious practice time ingraining bad habits. They'll see what skills you already bring to the table and stretch you in the right places. They'll teach you the non-textbook method that's way easier but only applicable 70% of the time. They'll tell you if you're ready or not and tell you what's next. YouTube ain't gonna do that for you, but goddamn I'd love to! 🤟

*[Edit: I previously claimed the record and got corrected! @mgclimber1 did the route in 4:15!! ⚡⚡] The only other reported solo time I can find is over 8 hours. I wouldn't be too surprised if it's been done faster as it was my first time on the route. But I figure the fastest way to find out is to claim it and have someone hurry to correct me! 😂 Also for the uninitiated, this was a rope-solo aid ascent, not a free solo.

I build a ton of funky anchors when I'm out climbing for fun, perhaps you should too. 🤔
.
⚠️Disclaimer: It is critically important that you have multiple bomber anchor points! If you do, it pretty much doesn't matter how you connect them (seriously). If you don't, no amount of rigging trickery is gonna make them bomber! Anyway, this post is about something else.
.
So why build all this whack stuff? Well, you sacrifice some efficiency in the short term as you figure out a new configuration BUT you gain efficiency in the long term by building a vast toolbox of techniques to apply when the time is right. 📈
.
So the next time you're running out of daylight on a long route after linking pitches and only have two carabiners, a lead card, and a pistachio on your harness, you'll dig into your toolbox and efficiently build a non-textbook, but totally bomber anchor. 💪
.
I find that a lot of people who have been climbing for multiple years (sometimes decades) still only do things one way. They build anchors one way, rappel one way, tether one way, clean anchors one way, carry the same kit, etc. While that's great when you're starting out it becomes very restrictive and slows your progress as a technician over time. The climber with a broader toolbox will be able to improvise and have less trouble learning to multi-pitch, aid climb, haul, rope solo, and self-rescue because they've already played with the component parts.🔧⤵️🧰

So about this pitch. I found it smack dab in the middle of Public Service wall next to some popular routes. It was obvious from the ground that this seam was tiny, there was no way to jam it, and therefore no way to climb it. At least that's what everyone must have thought. But that tiny, tiny, crack is at the back of a lovely flare and I thought "Golly, I bet I could kneebar that." and I could, and I did. Bish bash bosh, First Ascent.

Lol, JK. I came back another day, french-free-aid-junkshow-soloed a nearby route, swung over to fix a line on micro nuts, cleaned the seam, cleaned some choss, wiped ALL the dust off the wall, tried a terrible sequence on friable holds, basically gave up and then finally found the kneebars as the sun roasted the crag and I was wiped. I came back another day, jugged my line, realized the climb was the raddest shit since nylon, drilled an anchor, figured out the gear, and kept hacking at this one damn flake. I came back another day, this time armed with friends and Friends; one to hold the rope, and another to hold the rope. I decided to just go for the send without rehearsing it to death, I fell when I broke a foothold low on the route but otherwise cruised. "Might be 5.8" I thought. I tried again somehow struggling as if the first attempt had taken some effort, as if I felt pressure, as if I wouldn't have the energy for another go, as if nobody would come back to belay me, as if no one would ever love me. But I sent. Bish bash bosh. ✅
.

This is exactly the type of route I love in the Creek and I am so happy to make a contribution to this dreamland 💗 By far the best FA I have ever personally found and developed. 🤯

Had such a rewarding time in El Potrero Chico last month helping a bunch of fantastic humans and capable climbers to LEVEL UP towards their climbing goals! "Guiding" is neat and all but mentoring and coaching people to be confident on their own adventures is what I'm all about. 💗
.
Highlights include:
😎@zainy guiding me up and down a multi-pitch route to lock in his confidence!
🪢@sebiwegs and @shishurrito climbing up and rappelling down their first unguided multi-pitch while I advised from a nearby fixed line!
🧠@emileeeatsbugs calmly and patiently cruxing well over her bolt after doing some fall practice!
💪@juliamaimone sending the super techy crux of Pitch Black (800ft, 10d) after watching 4 other climbers hangdog!
🏞️So many good hangs with all the other homies in town, perfect weather, endless tacos, etc. etc.!
.
Can't thank you all enough for joining me and @verticalpursuitsclimbing on this adventure. Excited to see what you get up to on your own!
